POLICE arrested 16 people during an operation at Southern Cross Station to crack down on weapons.
Walk-through metal detectors were erected at station entrances and police used hand-held wands to conduct random searches as part of Operation Kraken on Friday night.
Three people were found to be carrying knives, and 12 people were arrested for possessing drugs of dependence.
Police cautioned four people for possessing cannabis, while the four other people were arrested for offences including being drunk in a public place.
Transit Safety Division Inspector Philip Green said similar operations would be held again to help make public transport safer.
“People need to be aware that carrying a weapon places them in increased danger,” he said.
“If someone is carrying a knife or other weapon there is a good chance that sooner or later they are going to use it or it could be used on them.”
