CNN plummets to lowest ratings in 23 years

For those still doubting CNN President Jeff Zucker’s decision to dedicate the 9 p.m. hour to original series, we point you to Exhibit A, via TV Newser:

Monday’s 9pm ET timeslot on CNN drew 181,000 total viewers, the lowest for the time period since at least Oct. 1, 1991, as far back as Nielsen electronic records go. Anderson Cooper anchored a second live hour of AC360 at 9pm. It was also the lowest rated hour of CNN’s entire day. Cooper finished fourth in the hour behind Megyn Kelly on Fox News, Rachel Maddow on MSNBC and Dr. Drew Pinsky on HLN, in both total viewers and the demo.

In April, Zucker announced that CNN would dedicate its 9 p.m. hour — which once belonged to Larry King, then Piers Morgan — to original, prerecorded series hosted by Mike Rowe (formerly of “Dirty Jobs”), John Walsh (“America’s Most Wanted”) and Lisa Ling (OWN). On Mondays, however, CNN still saves 9 p.m. for a second hour of Cooper, with apparently diminishing returns.

Shimrit Sheetrit, the spokesperson for Cooper’s program, did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the historic ratings low.
